Urologist Dr. Richard G. Rento II Provides Innovative Surgical And Medical Care For Prostate Cancer And More

If you’re a patient of Richard G. Rento II, M.D., F.A.C.S., you can count on this—he will spend plenty of time discussing your diagnosis, outlining your options, and ensuring that you know exactly what to expect in the weeks and months to come.

“I’m an educator,” he explains. “It’s important to me that I give my patients all of the information they need.” He’s also a surgeon whose expertise in state-of-the-art surgical procedures has made him highly sought-after in Hampton Roads. He serves as the medical director of urologic oncology at Riverside Cancer Care Center, and he also received the most votes in the category of urology in Hampton Roads Magazine’s 2013 Top Docs survey. In other words, Dr. Rento has got you covered.

He focuses primarily on treating kidney, bladder and prostate cancers, but Rento’s practice addresses the full spectrum of urological concerns, including female urology. It’s a fast-paced work environment, but the emphasis is very much centered on the patients. “Being able to work with my patients one on one is a definite highlight of this work,” he says. “My relationships with my patients are often long-lasting and that is extremely gratifying. They come to us at a time of real need—a life-changing cancer diagnosis perhaps—and we’re able to see them through.”

Why medicine?
“I grew up in a medical family—my mother was a nurse, and my father was a pediatrician. I just always knew that a career in medicine would be something I’d pursue.”

Why urology?
“My mentor at Brown was enthusiastic about the specialty and showed me how technologically advanced and varied the practice is. I’ve always loved surgery; it’s something that I’m still excited to do when I get to work in the morning. I love that this specialty has made groundbreaking advances in robotic and laser surgical procedures—rarely do we put knife to skin anymore. But I also love that this specialty is not solely surgical. There is a significant medical component which gives me lots of time with patients in the office as well as in the operating room.”

Awareness, education and outreach. “Education is a big part of what I do, both in the office and out in the community.” [Rento is a founding member of the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum, a nonprofit outreach organization.] “I want to be sure that men who are at risk for prostate cancer due to age, family history and other factors know they are at risk and get screened. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. You can’t wait until you notice symptoms to go in and see a doctor. And when people are given a diagnosis it’s important that they understand their treatment options.”

Men’s health issues:
“Men hear these things from their GPs all the time: watch your cholesterol and blood pressure, pay attention to your diet. Don’t smoke. These things are all true. My patients come to us because they are having specific problems—cancers and other disorders of the prostate, kidneys, bladder—my job is to address those issues so that they can get on with their lives.”

Why Hampton Roads?
“My wife, Lisa Casanova, M.D., was transferred to Langley in 1991 to complete her service with the Air Force as a staff physician. Neither of us knew much about the area before we moved here, but we both found good practices and partners we enjoyed working with. And it’s a great place to raise a family. So here we are, all these years later.”

Exercise and fun:
Spending time with family and friends, swimming and going to the gym, cheering on his kids at their athletic events.

Years in practice:

Medical School:
Dartmouth Medical School (New Hampshire) and Brown University Medical School (Rhode Island). Residency completed at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

Board certifications:
Diplomate of the American Board of Urology

Wife, Lisa Casanova, M.D. (Obstetrics and Gynecology, Riverside Partners in Women’s Health); children Nicole, Chloe and Joseph
