The Best Thing I Ate This Week: Duck Donuts
Anyone who knows me knows that when faced with the choice of sweet or savory, I will always go for the salty option. I typically forgo dessert for an appetizer instead, and I rarely keep sugary snacks in my apartment.
I do enjoy sweets, candy and chocolate–I have tastebuds, after all–but I'm not necessarily enticed by the food group as a whole.
All of this may be irretrievably changed forever, however, with the arrival of Duck Donuts to Virginia Beach. After months of construction, they opened their doors this morning.
When I stepped into the Duck Donuts store, I was immediately struck by the aroma of fresh-baked dough. It was intoxicating, with a subtle sweetness.
Taking cues from those around me, I grabbed a Donut Order Form and got to work. What sets Duck Donuts apart from larger doughnut stores is that they really are made to order. There is no need to arrive early, as nothing is made until you fill out your form. There is a variety of different "donut coatings" and toppings to choose from, pleasing even the most attention-deficient eaters.
My friend and I opted for two glazed with coconut, one chocolate coated with peanuts, one strawberry coated with rainbow sprinkles, one lemon coated with coconut, and one maple with bacon–the Donut of the Day (all to share, of course). Once I finished penciling in my order, I handed it to an friendly cashier who told me that my order number was #273. Then, I waited. Eagerly.
Luckily, I didn't have to wait long. Duck Donuts' order form process is pretty foolproof. I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly and quickly my order–along with others'–was completed, especially considering that all of the doughnuts are made à la minute. This is probably for the best, as I would have likely ended up in a small puddle of my own drool had I been forced to wait a second longer.
My first bite of the maple bacon doughnut was an experience I can describe only as ethereal.
The doughnut itself was dainty rather than dense, with a delightful yeastly flavor and the faintest hint of a bite on the outside. The maple glaze was warm and flavorful–but not sickeningly sweet–adding a delicate depth to the already delectable doughnut.The crispy bacon provided the perfect salty counterpant. Altogether, it was the definition of decadence.
Duck Donuts originally began as a dream venture in the Outer Banks for founder Russel DiGilio and his partner Robin Griffith, but the company has expanded over the years to encompass six locations along the east coast, including their newest store on Virginia Beach Boulevard. Yet with this growth, It's apparent that their dedication to delivering warm, delicious, made-to-order doughnuts to the masses has not wavered.
Needless to say, I am a new fan, and possible sweet tooth convert. I'm already considering my next Duck Donut combination (maple coating with peanuts).
