How To: Turn Your Kitchen into a Show Kitchen

The other night, our really good friends came over for some heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks. It was an evening that we have been planning for a few weeks now. But, just as most people are around this time of year, we just never got the chance to get together until Sunday night—it was à la minute.  So, like ruthless warriors, Josh and I cleaned the house from the bottom up. We figured we’d start from the bottom floor just in case we ran out of time. Pick-up, dust, vacuum, we did, along with bathrooms—the whole nine yards. But we were running late with dinner for 6 p.m. The last thing I wanted to do was make our friends come later. I mean, it already took weeks to get them here. What to do, what to do? It’s amazing the things you come up with last minute. Two words: Show kitchen.

DRINKS, PLEASE. If you should have anything ready it should be drinks. Have your ice, glasses, mixers, liquors and wine ready (and chilled if needed). Not only will your guests get excited, but you will have the opportunity to show off some new cocktails that you may have been experimenting with. Key: Everyone loves the sight and sound of a shaker.

SEATING. No matter how large or small your kitchen is, proper seating is necessary. Remember, the whole purpose of a show kitchen is to show. A couple of bar stools works great even if your guests are hanging out on a make-shift bar or island.

COOK AND TALK. It’s easier said than done. If you’re like me when you cook, sometimes you are just so engaged with whatever it is you are cooking. But really do make an effort to keep the conversation flowing with your guests. 

TEACH. Think about the unique experience that you are providing your guests, a live cooking show. Move over Emeril Live; you’re in the spotlight now, baby. You may think that you are cooking the simplest food, but everyone cooks differently even if it may be the same dish. 

TASTE. This is probably the best part about having guests in the kitchen with you: allowing them to taste your creation. Not only will they love it, but I’m sure you too will love the positive feedback. I cook for my husband all the time (and vice versa) but it’s nice to know that someone else thinks of your cooking in such a positive way. As a person who loves to entertain this is the opportunity for you to get feedback about your dishes as well.
