Coastal Virginia Idea House Partners and Products

Though a barn raising—the collective and voluntary building of a barn by members of a community for one of its own—may seem to us denizens of 2014 a quaint and nostalgic notion, it does serve to remind us of just how many people are still required to build a structure of any size, even a 4,000-square-foot home.

One such home, the just-under-a-million-dollar Coastal Virginia Idea House being “raised” on a half-acre lot at the North End of Virginia Beach at 35 ½ Street and Holly Road—on the 3rd hole of the Princess Anne Country Club—would not exist were it not for a whole host of partners working together with Coastal Virginia Magazine and Stephen Alexander Homes (SAH) in collaboration with Retnauer Baynes Associates, LLC, to put the “house” in “idea house.”

For those who have been following the home’s progress, you know that its Coastal Nostalgic style marries a turn of the 20th century Nantucket vernacular with the “old beachy beach feel” of our local community. This embrace of the past while celebrating the present means that, inside, a “stunningly” open floor-plan, upscale elements and eco-friendly features combine to create an overall relaxed vibe desired by today’s homeowners.

According to Stephen Quick IV, of SAH, all of the partners on this project bring to the table  “high-design” products made of the highest quality materials intended to last for generations with the best warranties in the market, all backed up by stellar service. And many have done so for well over a decade of partnership with SAH. 

Following is the lineup of Idea House partners and a mere teasing glimpse of their contributions:

The home will be clad with Allura Siding, a fiber cement siding product that looks like real wood but that, according to Quick, “is hands down the best product for this demanding climate.” With trim alone numbering in the thousands of linear feet, a product that can stand up to a pounding from Mother Nature is essential. Allura is available as lap and vertical siding, shakes, trim, soffit and architectural panels in a spectrum of colors.

Brizo solid brass plumbing fixtures in polished chrome provide what Quick describes as a “liquid” look. Stylistically, the fixtures selected for this home have a “classical undertone with a modernist impression.”  

Closet Factory’s designs will demonstrate in both the master bath and walk-in kitchen pantry how handsome, functional spaces can “change a family’s everyday lifestyle.” Quick is certain that the pantry, with its glass 1940s-style door (a change from the previous update) and nifty specialized storage compartments, “will be a space that homeowners actually want to show off.”

Providing kitchen and bath tile is Daltile, known for its beautiful, versatile, timeless and on-trend options in a wide array of materials with a wealth of finishes, each one more stunning than the last. For the kitchen, the design team chose what Quick describes as a “phenomenal new white Carrera marble backsplash with glass inserts.” Clean, crisp white continues on the floor, walls and shower of the master bath, where it combines with other features like multiple spray shower heads to create “a spa-retreat experience to enjoy every day.”

Ferguson is installing all lighting (Progress Lighting) and plumbing (Brizo) fixtures, as well as a Thermidor appliance package for a kitchen in which Quick asserts would make “any professional chef feel at home.”

As with many of SAH’s award-winning homes over the years, Susan Wilson and Goodwin Interiors are SAH’s partners in interior design. “We’re a bunch of guys,” laughs Quick, “and they help us translate our vision into a reality” with colors, textures and patterns that “can exude a certain feel.”

Greenwich Kitchens has been SAH’s exclusive kitchen provider for some 13 years, meeting every challenge head-on with spectacular results. In this home, Quick dubs the 10-foot kitchen island with its built-in dining table to be the star. Sporting Shiloh inset cabinetry and a Sherwin-Williams specialty finish, it is a show stopper, though the 38-inch, French-style, turn-of-the-century wooden range hood deserves its due, right down to its quiet 1000 CFM (cubic feet per minute) in-line blower.

Via an “eclectic mix” of fixtures from Progress Lighting come some “slightly modernist overtones” that lend a “streamlined, clean, crisp edge” and contribute to the home’s “airy feeling.” Having partnered with Progress for some 14 or more years, Quick praises the company for attention to detail, keeping pace with trends—introducing new products twice a year—and affordability.

Young’s Flooring, a Redi Carpet Company, is providing carpet in upstairs bedrooms and, downstairs, beautiful Shaw hardwood flooring with a reclaimed hand-scraped appearance. Quick feels this company—yet another longtime partner—offers “cutting-edge” products that are “tough, durable and wear the best,” even, he asserts, after 60,000–70,000 people have paraded through a show home. 

Smith & Keene, who Quick dubs “one of the most well-established forms in the Coastal Virginia area,” is providing multi-zoned Lenox heating and AC with some, as yet unspecified, upgrades.

Structured Cable Systems is installing innovative and practical On-Q home technology and structured wiring products that, according to Quick, will “distribute any kind of audio system and allow you to distribute up to four different sources simultaneously,” along with “wireless capability for streaming.”

VisionScapes is responsible for creating this home’s somewhat manicured and traditional hardscapes and greenscapes but ones with a beachy flavor derived from coastal vegetation.
