Record numbers deported in 2011

According to number released Friday by the Office of Immigration Statistics, during the 2011 discal year, U.S. authorities deported 391,953 foreign-born individuals. Ninety-three percent of those deported came from four countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The figures are down slightly for the 2012 fiscal year–with one month let, the United Stated has deported approximately 366,000 undocumented civilians. (Source)

At least 77 dead in Aleppo

At least 77 people are dead in Syria after government forces used shelling and air raids to bombard Aleppo on Saturday. As a result of the fighting, pipes responsible for delivering water to several hundred thousand people in the country were ruptured, leaving certain areas with no drinking water. Across the country, at least 148 are believed to have been killed Saturday. (Source)

Serena Williams wins U.S. Open

Ranked number 1 in the world, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka gave Serena Williams a run for her money Sunday, but Williams ultimately took the title 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. It was Williams' fourth U.S. Open title, and her 15th Grand Slam tournament victory. (Source)

States say feds can't 'unmarry' gay couples

Vermont has joined New York and Connecticut in their fight against the government in a U.S. court of appeals over the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. The states have filed amicus briefs in the case of Edie Windsor, a widow who is fighting to reclaim $350,000 in estate taxes that the governement claimed when Windsor's partner died. (Source)

 Fake bearded burglar strikes again

According to the police, a local man notorious for donning fake facial hair and robbing dollar stores and auto parts shops on the Peninsula has struck again. Since Nov. 6, 2011, an unknown black male has robbed about two dozen businesses between Hampton and Newport News. His disguise of choice is a fake beard. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or the Hampton Police Division at 757-727-6111. (Source)
