NY Appeals Court nixes Defense of Marriage Act

A divided federal appeals court in Manhattan struck down the Defense of Marriage Act today as unconstitutional, rejecting the law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court is expected to take up the case in the next year. James Esseks, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, called the ruling “a watershed moment in the legal movement for lesbian and gay rights.” “It’s fabulous news for same-sex couples in New York and other states,” he said. Google accidentally posts earnings results early, misses on revenue

Earlier today Google accidentally released its third-quarter earnings, reporting a surprising 20 percent drop in profit. The tech giant’s price fell 9% after the premature release, prompting Nasdaq to halt the stock’s trading. The earnings release was inadvertently posted to the Securities and Exchange Commission website hours earlier than expected. The accident was apparent from a note included in the release that said it is “Pending Larry quote,” likely a reference to Google chief executive officer Larry Page. (Source)

Portsmouth senior citizen sentenced for drug charges

Archie Lee McClennan, 66, was sentenced to 21 months in prison for drug and firearm-related charges. McClennan's grandson, Alex Lee McElhaney, and Michael Casey Brown were also arrested because of their involvement in the scheme. During July 2011 to February 2012, Brown imported a total of 14.7 kilograms of methylone from China and delivered the drug to McClennan's home. Armed, McClennan and and his grandson distributed the drug in Portsmouth. After pleading guilty in June, McElhaney and Brown will be sentenced on October 26. (Source)

Chesapeake teacher charged with assault

Tara Harris, a teacher at Butts Road Intermediate School, was charged for simple assault on a 10-year-old in an incident that occurred on October 2. Stephanie Bennett, the child's mother, filed a complaint after noticing her daughter was cut on the hand while learning Islamic hand signs. Bennett claimed Harris jerked her daughter, who has a learning disability, while in the classroom. Harris has not commented on the matter and no longer residing at the school. (Source)
