27 dead in Conn. elementary school shooting
According to the Associated Press, 27 people, including 18 children, were tragically killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. this morning. Most of the shooting took place in a kindergarten classroom. The shooter–reportedly the son of a teacher at the school–is dead. School and local emergency officials are accounting for the surviving children, who will be released to their parents to get them home. (Source)
Secretary of State John Kerry?
Susan Rice has dropped out of the race to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, and now Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is presumed to be the leading contender. Although there could be other candidates Obama is considering, observers have noted that Kerry and Obama have a strong political bond and friendship. (Source)
Eisenhower and Iwo Jima ships to return home
The Navy announced today that ships from the Eisenhower Carrier Group and the Iwo Jima Ready Group will bring about 6,300 sailors home ahead of schedule next week. Though the ships were scheduled to arrive home late next week, they will depart earlier in an effort to miss bad weather. (Source)
