Pope Benedict sends his first tweet

The Pope is now on Twitter. Pope Benedict XVI posted his first official tweet to 6660,000 followers on Wednesday. The tweet was retweeted more than 9,000 times within only 15 minutes. The Pope plans to tweet often–and in several languages–to engage more directly with the world's Catholic population, especially young ones. (Source)

Three dead in Oregon mall shooting

A white-masked gunman wearing ran into the Clackamas Town Center mall outside Portland, Ore., on Tuesday afternoon and fired a many as 60 shots from an assault rifle, killing two people and seriously wounding a third, before killing himself. Police have not released the names of the shooter or any of his victims or speculated on the motive. (Source)

Delta buys stake in Virgin Atlantic Airlines

Delta Air Lines announced Tuesday that it was buying Singapore Airlines' 49 percent stake in Virgin Atlantic for $360 million, in a deal that is expected to boost its share of the New York to London route. Delta hopes to start a trans-Atlantic joint ventureby 2013 that–if approved by regulators in the U.S. and Europ– will give it access to hard-to-get landing slots at London's Heathrow airport. The airlines will continue to fly under their old names, but they will share revenue. (Source)

Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel to be auctioned

The prestigious Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel will be auctioned off this month after failing to pay off its debt. Its general manager said that it will remain open despite any changes. The public sale is set for 1 p.m. December 20 at Circuit Court. (Source)
