Charcuteries from Saint Germain

Goth-esque and urban chic, Norfolk’s Saint Germain invited us in with its sexy, city décor and kept us with daring, sophisticated, well-executed flavors—many that we’ve not seen in these parts before.

The menu is filled with bites of this and bites of that, although “grandiose” offerings are available too. We stuck with small plates to maximize as many tastes as we could.

A dizzying array of charcuteries: pates and terrines, sausages and salumi, along with cheeses, was a focus. Favorites: sublime Hogs Head Cheese, sweet and meaty Terrine of Pork and Apples, robust Beef Tongue Pastrami and earthy/spicy African Blood Sausage. We’d order them all again.

Also of note are the creative and crazy-good cocktails. We can’t stop raving about The Violet Hour, which left us in a purple haze with the subtle mixing of gin, crème de violette, lemon, violet simple syrup and egg white.

Saint Germain is located at 255 Granby St., Norfolk. Their hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 5 p.m.–2 a.m. Call 757-321-9445 for more information.
