Brushstrokes of the Bay

As if pulled by the tides, Carter, who now resides in Charleston, South Carolina, returns repeatedly to the largest estuary in the United States to feed her artistic imagination.

In the spirit of the nautical gifts that wash up daily on the shore of the bay in ever-evolving cycles, Carter offers her Chesapeake Bay map and wildlife watercolors as giclée prints in a soft palette. Her background in fine art, graphic design and marine biology intermingle in this series featuring two maps of the bay, one overlaid with a great blue heron, and eight additional wildlife images: a blue crab, Canada goose, great blue heron, monarch butterfly, red-breasted merganser, rockfish, spotted seatrout and winter flounder.

Building layers of transparent colors, glazes and textures as she strives for a balance between realism and abstraction to capture the interactions within a dynamic ecosystem, Carter’s work is included in shows and private, resort and corporate collections throughout the world. Closer to home, Carter has developed series of paintings—oil, watercolor and mixed media—for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to help influence and educate residents through membership and development campaigns.

About the map and wildlife series, she shared recently that she hopes “this series will serve as a vehicle to start a conversation about the Chesapeake Bay and inspire friends and family to get involved to preserve and protect our magnificent national treasure.”
