Nightmare Mansion

One of the country’s top 10 rated haunted attractions, the Nightmare Mansion is a walk-through haunted house located on the resort strip of Virginia Beach. Complete with live actors, the five to 10 minute tour of terror may feel like a lifetime. Operational hours are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Ghost Train

The Ghost Train is a half-hour ride through the haunted woods of Northwest River Park in Chesapeake. As you wind deep into the dark woods, a storyteller tells a terrifying tale that unfolds along the tracks, making several stops along the way to witness grizzly scenes and gather more details of the story. Hunt Club Farm

Virginia Beach’s most popular Halloween activities venue is celebrating is 25th year bringing fear to residents. Attractions include the Field of Screams, the Village of the Dead and the most popular Haunted Hay Ride. The farm is open from Wednesday through Sunday. $25 a person includes all attractions. Haunted Ship on Nauticus

Explore three decks of darkness aboard the Battleship Wisconsin. The event features a brand new tour route that runs through the ship’s lower decks. Tours are held on Oct. 17–19 and 24–26 from 6:30–11 p.m. Tickets are $15. Nauticus members $10. This attraction is not recommended for children under 12. (More info)

Olde Towne Ghost Walk

Based on the famous Jack the Ripper Walks in London, this tour rakes spectators on a spooky guided walking tour past haunted houses and mysterious mansions in historic Olde Towne Portsmouth. At each house, actors in costume will recant the legends of ghostly encounters and things that go bump in the night. Tickets are sold for three time slots: 7, 8 and 9 p.m. on Oct. 25. Groups will leave in five minute intervals from Trinity Church Graveyard. The tour is approximately 45 minutes long and ends at Middle Street Park, where hot cider will be served with entertainment and information tables. (More info)

Merry Oaks Stables' Haunted Barn

Thousands of Hampton Roads residents come out to Windsor for this formidably fearsome farm of 100 acres. All ticket proceeds will benefit Diamonds in the Rough Equine Rescue to assist in rescuing abandoned and abused horses. Admission is an $8 donation. Operating hours are every Friday and Saturday in October from 8–11 p.m. (More info)

Spooky Acres Haunted House

Come to Chesapeake Square Mall to celebrate 19 years of haunting with the March of Dimes annual haunted house. Just because it’s a mall doesn’t mean it won’t scare the yell out of you. Prepare for your worst nightmares as you wander the halls of horror. Times of operation: Oct. 17–19, 24–26, 28–31 and Nov 1–2 from 6:30–10 p.m. (More info)

The Original Ghosts of Williamsburg

Take a stroll by candlelight through the moon drenched streets of the colonial Capitol as you learn of the folklore and legends based on the book, The Ghosts of Williamsburg by author L.B. Taylor, Jr. You will stop briefly outside the homes, buildings and shops where you will hear the stories and interviews L.B. had with people who lived, visited and worked inside. The tour lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes, begins at 8:30 p.m. and is $11. Take the Extreme Ghost Tour at 10:30 p.m. for $15. Tours are held every night through October. (More info)
