About our survey: This year, Hampton Roads Magazine publishes our most comprehensive Top Docs list to date. In 2012, we partnered with Consumers’ Checkbook, a non-profit consumer company based in Washington, D.C., to present the guide to our area’s top physicians. Consumers’ Checkbook’s Center for the Study of Services was founded in 1974 to help Americans get high-quality services and products at the best possible prices. Its “Top Doctors” surveys have been done in 53 major U.S. cities. This survey was done exclusively for Hampton Roads Magazine.

Consumers’ Checkbook surveyed all active office-based doctors on the American Medical Association mailing list for the Hampton Roads area. It asked each surveyed doctor to explain which one or two specialists, in each of 41 different specialty fields, he or she “would consider most desirable for care of a loved one.” The list of top doctors contains the names of physicians who were mentioned multiple times.

On the following pages you will find the results of this survey, plus the winners in our own Hampton Roads Magazine Top Docs 2013 survey. We mailed and e-mailed surveys to physicians currently practicing in the Hampton Roads region and asked them a simple question—who would you call if you or a loved one needed medical care? Each physician was asked to recommend one or two doctors in more than 35 specialties. Our survey received approximately 226 doctor nominations. Those who received the most votes in each specialty are listed as Top Docs, along with the Consumers’ Checkbook results, in this issue.

Although both surveys were extensive and their colleagues respect the doctors on these lists, absence from the lists does not suggest anything against any physician. It simply provides a great place to start when looking for quality healthcare.
