CHKD Ambulances Get Kid-Friendly Makeover

The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) partnered with Davis Ad Agency, Virginia Beach artist Troy Summerellrecognized locally as OnieTonie, and local design company, The Graphics Shop, to create custom vehicle wraps for three hospital ambulances. Summerell’s seascape designs adorn one of CHKD’s special care units with vibrant seashores and two larger, special transport units with brightly colored fish and sea turtles.

The collaboration stemmed from CHKD’s desire to provide a comforting atmosphere for all young patients, both in an ambulance and in the hospital. CHKD believes that the emergency vehicles’ new vibrant artwork will improve the seemingly unnerving experience of an ambulance ride.

Assigned with spearheading the project, Davis Ad Agency contracted Troy Summerell to design the artwork for the vehicle wraps. Summerell had previously worked with CHKD to design a large-scale mural for their new Landstown Health Center located in Virginia Beach. The signature smiling fish seen in the second-floor mural match the sea creatures included in the new transport wraps.

“It was an absolute honor for me to have my OnieTonie™ designs be used in this truly unique and special project,” says Summerell. “I’m such a huge fan of CHKD and what they do for children, especially here locally in Hampton Roads. My cousin fought leukemia when we were growing up and CHKD took amazing care of him and my family during that time and it’s something that we have never forgotten.”

Summerell’s three paintings were printed and installed this November by The Graphics Shop, a small veteran-owned business in Chesapeake specializing in vehicle wraps, signage and industrial UV screen printing. Funding was provided by The King’s Daughters, Farm Fresh and We Promise Foundation.
