Sports - Cam Newton Leads Panthers to First Win

Cam Newton led the Carolina Panthers to their first win of the season despite torrential downpours late in the second half. Cam Newtown and Jacksonville’s Blaine Gabbert struggled all day to move the ball, passing for a combined 297 yards. The Panthers won 16-10 on a late fourth quarter touchdown pass from Newton to Greg Olsen.

After throwing consecutive 400 yard passing days, Newton completed 18-of-34 passes for 158 yards for the 1-2 Panthers. Newton has thrown a record 1,012 yards in his first three NFL games, becoming the first rookie in the league history to accomplish this honor. Blaine Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, connected on 12-of-21 passes for 139 yards, one touchdown and an interception in his first career start. The touchdown came right before the half as Gabbert threw a 36 yard strike to Mike Thomas in the swamp conditions as timed expired.

Noteable:  Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones Drew (24 carries, 122 yds.) Newton threw zero interception and wasn’t sacked.
