Coastal Virginia Magazine is seeking motivated and outgoing interns for the Editorial Department during Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: assembling the Datebook calendar of events, managing press releases/story pitches, acquiring images/art, general research and fact checking, assisting in copy editing and proofing pages, helping with large-scale projects and events and general administrative duties. There also may be opportunity to write small and medium length pieces for the publication. Ideal candidates are college sophomores, juniors or seniors seeking real world experience in the magazine industry. Experience writing and editing preferred. Internship is unpaid and dates/hours are flexible, although a minimum of 16 hours/week is ideal. Graphic Design Internship
As a graphic design intern within VistaGraphics’ Production Department, you will be using InDesign 5 and PhotoShop 5. Graphics Interns will learn to construct ads for numerous print publications as well as the systematic approach to organizing the massive amounts of art files that a publisher of more than 60 titles has. The primary publications that the art internship focuses on are: Hardbound Restaurant and Menu Guides for five hospitality markets as well as coupon and map booklets for seven hospitality markets. This is a well-rounded 100–120 semester hour internship that will also touch on website work, creative speculative advertising for prospective clients and their marketing campaigns, graphic print projects such as brochures, as well as layout and design for city and lifestyle publications. -The magazine staff works very far in advance. It's best not to pitch a story on an event that is happening in the next week or even the next month. Think far ahead.
-Before pitching or writing a story, pick up a copy of our magazine and familiarize yourself with our style (both in writing and content) and what we are all about.
-Story pitches likely to get the most attention are ones with a unique angle or that cover a tired Hampton Roads topic in a new way.
-Query should outline your idea by explaining the principles, sources, relevance, etc. An outline in addition to the query is helpful.
