Culliphers Open Second Farm Market on First Colonial
The summer season welcomes new beginnings for the Cullipher family as they plant their feet on First Colonial Road soil, the former location of Stoney’s Produce. Nearly 200-year-old roots of farming heritage in northeastern North Carolina and Coastal Virginia continue for the Culliphers with the opening of their second farm market.
Plentiful with homegrown asparagus, over 30 varieties of tomatoes and other produce, the new farm market will also be your one-stop shop for bedding plants, fresh-baked goods and other locally sourced products, including fresh seafood, apple and peach cider, honey, peanut and pecan products and artisanal soap and coffee. Visitors are also invited to cut their own flowers and herbs from the community-style garden. “We hope that the market will not only serve as a place to buy the freshest and finest foods but also as a community center for knowledge including history, current local issues and interests as well as what to do with kohlrabi (looks like a flying saucer without its leaves) and other lesser-known vegetables and fruits,” Mike Cullipher tells us.
Three generations of Culliphers tend their Pungo location—a 250-acre farm on Princess Anne Road, where more than 250 varieties of produce flourish. The opening of the First Colonial Road location introduces an updated logo and brand, and visitors can anticipate their first apple crop this fall. “Farming a new piece of land has always been exciting for our family,” Mike expresses. “It involves both a new commitment and a new opportunity to preserve the land and cultivate the best produce we can from its soil.”
The new Cullipher Farm Market is located at 1065 First Colonial Rd., Virginia Beach. Hours are 9 a.m.–6 p.m., seven days a week through Thanksgiving. Visit CullipherFarm.com or call 757-721-7456 for more information.
