The hospitals in the region are among the most state-of-the-art anywhere, and a host of national professional awards prove it. For everyday (if unfortunate) bumps and bruises, there’s always a neighborhood hospital close by that can patch you up in no time. And for those situations when a more serious condition arises, these hospitals offer specialists in every field, meaning that the best treatment anywhere is only a short trip away.

Chesapeake Regional Medical Center

With 310 licensed beds and more than 400 active physicians, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is ranked among the top five busiest hospitals in Virginia. The hospital obstetrics unit— the BirthPlace—has 32 private postpartum rooms and features personalized nursing care. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center also staffs a progressive cancer treatment center. The rehabilitation services department offers inpatient and outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy. The center also houses a state-of-the-art Sleep Center.


Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital

Riverside Shore Memorial operates a skilled nursing facility, psychiatric services unit, maternal and child health unit, intensive care and emergency departments, an expanded and renovated radiology department, and the Shore Cancer Center. It contains 143 beds.


Southampton Memorial Hospital

Established in 1963, this 221- bed facility serves the needs of more than 28,000 area residents. With a medical staff of nearly 100 physicians, the hospital’s range of specialties includes neurology, obstetrics, urology and general surgery. In addition to a 24-hour emergency room, the hospital provides services such as a sleep disorders center, home health and hospice.


Riverside Walter Reed Hospital

State-of-the-art technology, 80 physicians, and affiliate staff in neurology, neurosurgery and radiation oncology make this 67-bed facility personal and complete. In addition to a complete range of outpatient services, the facility offers 24-hour emergency care and access to the Riverside Dialysis Center.

Sentara Gloucester Medical Arts

After opening its doors in spring 2008, Sentara Gloucester has provided quality medical service to the Middle Peninsula. The hospital provides a wide range of outpatient services alongside the relocated Gloucester Medical Associates and Urgent Care facility. The new campus includes Obstetrics and Gynecology department and a Child and Adolescent Center.


Sentara CarePlex Hospital

Sentara CarePlex Hospital features the expertise of 400 physicians and 194 private patient rooms equipped with internet access, email and entertainment. The hospital runs one of the state’s largest emergency departments, as well as a cancer center. Sentara CarePlex has one of the nation’s only electronic intensive care units for uninterrupted monitoring of critically ill patients. The doctors and nurses working in the eICU can record a patient’s vital signs and analyze other important health data in real time using a bank of computers and special software.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The 516-bed facility serves a 15-county area in eastern Virginia and a 10-county area in North Carolina. The fourtholdest facility in the Virginia healthcare system, this teaching hospital provides a full range of patient care services ranging from acute inpatient and psychiatric care to hospice palliative care and home rehabilitationand residential services.


Mary Immaculate Hospital

This Peninsula hospital provides specialty cardiac, diabetes, MRI, maternity and renal dialysis services, as well as a joint center. The 115-bed St. Francis Nursing Center is adjacent to the main hospital. The campus includes the Mary Immaculate Medical Pavilion, Denbigh Medical Center, St. Francis Nursing Center, the Community Education and Health Resource Center and the ParCourse Fitness Trail.

Riverside Regional Medical Center

Riverside, which began serving the Peninsula in 1916, has grown into a 510-bed hospital incorporating the specialties of more than 300 physicians. The oncology intensive care unit is the only facility on the Peninsula able to provide stem cell and autologous bone marrow transplants. The cancer treatment center is nationally accredited, and the Riverside Heart Center provides emergency care, diagnostics, delicate open heart surgery and a full spectrum of services through stage III cardiac rehabilitation. Riverside also has the Peninsula’s only permanent Magnetic Resonance Imaging center.

Sentara Port Warwick

Sentara’s Port Warwick campus was the first facility to provide an Emergency Department outside a hospital. The campus also includes the area’s first hyperbaric oxygen treatment center and an advanced imaging center. Sentara also provides stateof- the-art breast care including screening, diagnostic, treatment and support at the Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center.


Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

Virginia’s only freestanding, full-service pediatric hospital is licensed for 186 beds and treats children from birth through age 21. The professional staff includes more than 500 physicians and 95 specialists who attend to children’s developmental, psychological, physical and social needs. CHKD houses the region’s largest and most experienced neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit, as well as the Center for Pediatric Research. The Surgery Center is the only pediatric surgical facility in southeastern Virginia.

Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center

Specialized services are provided by the Bon Secours Cancer Center at DePaul, the Sleep Center, the Vascular Center at DePaul and the Center for Birth. The Midwifery Center, the region’s first and only hospitalbased midwife birthing center, is designed to offer labor and delivery in a homelike environment while providing the safety of a hospital. Founded in 1999, it averages 125 births a year. DePaul’s Joint and Spine Center cares for those suffering from joint, back, muscle or bone pain.

Eastern Virginia Medical School

Home of the nation’s first in vitro fertilization clinic, the medical centers of EVMS include today’s foremost reproductive medicine program, as well as comprehensive therapeutic and rehabilitation services for diseases of the hearing system, balancing system and skull base. There is also a Cardiovascular and Renal Research Center, the Center for Pediatric Research— including a long-term international study of the properties of human milk—the Center for Ocular Pharmacology, the Sleep Disorders Center, the Diabetes Institute and the Voice Center for individuals experiencing speech and swallowing problems.

Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital

Considered one of the finest sub-acute care facilities on the East Coast, Lake Taylor specializes in treating patients too well to warrant a hospital stay. The facility contains 296 beds and a sub-acute care pediatric unit. Primary treatment groups treat patients who need care for respiratory, stroke, orthopedic, cancer and neurological illness, as well as general medical rehabilitation. A ventilator weaning program incorporates a multidimensional approach to respiratory rehabilitation.

Sentara Heart Hospital

Sentara Heart Hospital is the region’s first and only hospital dedicated to the heart. It offers comprehensive cardiac care, from diagnostics to open heart surgery and transplants. The hospital includes 112 inpatient beds and 45 pre- and post-procedural rooms, all of which are private. It has been named one of “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News and World Report.

Sentara Leigh Hospital

This 250-bed hospital features all private rooms and specializes in orthopedic, gynecological, general and urological services. The Family Maternity Suite has 16 labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also offered, speeding the healing of patients with major wounds, decompression sickness and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

Located near the medical campus of Eastern Virginia Medical School and Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Norfolk General houses 563 beds and is regionally and nationally known for its many highly specialized services such as the Sentara Cancer Institute, high-risk pregnancy center, the Jones Institute, in vitro fertilization, trauma services, transplant, microsurgery and reconstructive surgery, and the nation’s first electronic intensive care unit. In November, Norfolk General became the first hospital in southeastern Virginia to be named a ‘Magnet Hospital’ by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Nightingale, the region’s air ambulance, is based at Norfolk General.


Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center

The only civilian hospital operating in Portsmouth, Maryview is a 346-bed, acute care hospital with 400 physicians who represent a range of specialties; services are provided at the hospital’s Epilepsy Center, Behavioral Medicine Center, Martha W. Davis Cancer Treatment Center, Sleep Disorders Center and the Bon Secours Heart Institute. Maryview also offers both inpatient and outpatient dialysis and operates a joint replacement center for people undergoing a hip or knee replacement. In 2004, a Cardiac Center opened to provide open-heart surgeries including coronary bypass surgery, valve replacement and repair and permanent partial artificial hearts.


Sentara St. Luke’s

St. Luke’s is among Sentara’s newest care facilities, serving residents of the Smithfield area in Isle of Wight County. Sentara St. Luke’s is equipped for advanced imaging, urgent care, physical therapy and physician practices. The first phase of construction, completed in early 2010, included a 52,000-squarefoot medical office building.


Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View

This state-of-the-art healthcare facility is a department of the Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center specializing in outpatient surgery. It features the Millie Lancaster Women’s Center, with massage therapy, breast biopsy, and even a health information library. Harbour View also houses Hampton Roads’ number one surgical weight loss program for people suffering from morbid obesity at the Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss Center.

Sentara BelleHarbour

This new comprehensive outpatient medical campus opened for service in June 2008. The 75,000-square-foot facility offers a full-service, 24-hour emergency department, advanced diagnostic imaging, laboratory, physical therapy, sleep center, occupational medicine and physicians’ offices. Primary care services are also available.

Sentara Obici Hospital

Departments include medical, surgical, intensive care, physical rehabilitation, neurological, obstetrical, oncology, pediatric and behavioral medicine. The 168-bed facility offers a full range of diagnostic cardiac testing, a sleep disorders center, MRI and other diagnostic services. It provides digital mammography and is the only hospital in the region to offer women ImageChecker technology to read their mammograms. Obici also operates the Heartburn Treatment Center for treating ailments such as acid reflux disease. The Women’s Center provides mothers and newborns with obstetrical, gynecological and newborn care.


Bon Secours Health Center at Virginia Beach

Sentara Bayside Hospital

Bayside offers a comprehensive gastrointestinal health program, neuroscience services and diagnostic services. The 158-bed, acute care facility specializes in outpatient diagnostic and surgical services and is home to a contemporary care environment for general medical/surgical and ambulatory services.

Sentara Princess Anne Health Campus

Services include advanced imaging services, a full-service pharmacy, and a laboratory for maximum outpatient convenience. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital

Virginia Beach General offers innovative technology in the areas of orthopedics and neuroscience with a dedicated wing for services such as stroke treatment, total joint replacement and trauma surgery. The 282-bed acute care facility offers open heart surgery and cardiac care, a diabetes center, a sleep disorders center, a cancer center, the Tidewater Perinatal Center for high risk pregnancies, a neonatal intensive care unit and the region’s only Level III Trauma Center.


Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center

Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital opened in summer 2006. This 145-bed, acute-care hospital features an eICU and advanced imaging capabilities, including the 32-slice CT scanner for fast, accurate cardiac diagnostics. This is among Sentara’s newest hospitals, billed as an “ultramodern medical center.”
