Dirty Girl Mud Run

A women-only, filthy 5K is coming to Virginia Beach to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation

“Getting dirty for a good cause” is the name of the game at the Dirty Girl Mud Run. The Dirty Girl, coming to the East Coast Equestrian Training Center in Virginia Beach on April 27, is the original 5k women-only national mud run. Dirty Girl prides itself in being challenging yet attainable for women of all ages and abilities, with an untimed course and obstacles that are all completely optional.

A portion of the proceeds for the run goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). In 2012, Dirty Girl raised over $250,000 for NBCF and anticipates raising over $500,000 this year. In the spirit of supporting those who have battled cancer, Dirty Girl has an honor system in which cancer survivors can enter the race completely free of charge.

Christine Keenan is a runner who has done half-marathons, trail runs and 10ks, but she has never done anything quite like Dirty Girl before. “I’m really going into this with more open expectations than other races,” she says. “I liked the idea of doing a fun race that was untimed, more tame and more obtainable than other mud runs, so I asked around, and now my good friend and I are doing it together.”

Forming teams is greatly encouraged as part of promoting the spirit of camaraderie among the participants. “A lot of people do shirts and crazy team costumes, which adds to the fun, female vibe of the race. My friend and I are going to make some cute team shirts,” Christine says. Ladies are encouraged to help each other get through the obstacles and cheer each other on throughout the day.

The first wave of runners is at 8 a.m., with waves continuing until 4 p.m. The race is $100 or completely free for cancer survivors. Refreshments will be available throughout the day, along with great music and entertainment. Click here for more information and registration.
