Classic Southern Slaw

Here’s a recipe for Classic Southern Slaw, from Patrick Evans-Hylton’s book, Dishing Up Virginia.

For the dressing

1 cup mayonnaise

1/2 cup sour cream

1/4 cup cider vinegar,

1/3 cup sugar

1/4 tsp celery seed

1/4 teaspoon dry mustard

1/4 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper


For the slaw

1 medium head green cabbage, finely chopped

1 large carrot, peeled and finely chopped



Add all dressing ingredients to a glass jar and seal the lid; shake to incorporate the ingredients. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour; shake again before dressing slaw.

In a large bowl add cabbage and carrot. Pour the dressing over the salad, and toss to coat. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Toss again before serving; serve with a slotted spoon.
