NSU Defeats Hampton 74-67 in the Battle of the Bay Showdown

Pendarvis Williams scored 16 points to help the MEAC defending champs Norfolk State defeat the Hampton Pirates 74-67 in the Battle of the Bay Friday night. NSU won for its sixth straight and improved to 7-0 in the MEAC.

The 6,000 plus fans at Joseph Echols Hall truly got their money's worth as this heated rivalry truly lived up to the billing.  Williams hit 5 of 9 from the field and 5 of 6 at the foul line and also grabbed six rebounds.  Rob added 13 points and Malcolm Hawkins 11 for the 12-10 Spartans.

Deron Powers scored 20 points, and Du’Vaughn Maxwell added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the 5-13 Pirates. Hampton led 39-32 at halftime, but Norfolk State opened the second half on a 9-2 run. Williams scored six points during a 15-3 Spartan run for a 64-54 advantage with five minutes remaining.  Despite the run, NSU left the door open, shooting a dismal 48 percent (17-35) from the three-throw line. Kris Brown and Rashid Gaston had monster dunks in the final seconds to electrify the frenzy crowd and seal the victory.
