On the verge of a government shutdown, The Capitol is quiet on Sunday

The U.S. government appeared on Sunday to be on the verge of shutting down for the first time in nearly two decades as House leaders were running out of time and options to keep it open. House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) declined to say whether Republicans would consider the only plan President Obama and other Democratic leaders insist they will accept: a simple bill that funds federal agencies without dismantling any part of Obama’s signature 2010 healthcare law. McCarthy predicted that the House will “send another provision not to shut the government down but to fund it. And it will have a few other options in there for the Senate to look at.” On Sunday, the halls of the Capitol were dark, there were no negotiations, and neither the House nor the Senate was in session. Family feud comes to a violent end

A two-decade family feud came to a violent end on Friday in Ashville, PA when a man shot dead the two home invaders that killed his wife and son, not knowing the assailants included his long-estranged daughter. Authorities say it appears that Josephine and her husband Jeffrey Ruckinger planned to murder her family at their rural Pennsylvania home. Josephine was armed with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun, and Jeffrey carried a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun as they approached the Frew family home. Josephine’s mother, Roberta, 64, answered the door and was shot by her daughter at point-blank range. Her brother, John Jr., 47, was shot multiple times by Jeffrey. Josephine’s father, John, 67, grabbed a .22 revolver and came out from the bedroom to find his daughter, whom he didn’t initially recognize, pointing the shotgun at him. Frew fired once, hitting her in the head, then turned and exchanged fire with Jeffrey Ruckinger, killing him. He then called police. Josephine was still alive when police arrived but later died at an area hospital. John Frew was not hurt. (Source)
