Escaped Newport News prison inmate captured at apartment

Escaped prison inmate, Eric Fling, spent more than eight hours on the run before he was captured at the Meridian Parkside Apartments in Newport News this afternoon. Fling had been discovered missing from the facility around 6 a.m. this morning, and the jail was immediately placed on lockdown and searched. There were sightings of Fling across Hampton Roads throughout the day before police located Fling and took him into custody. (Source)

Bombing in Iraq kills at least eight people

Iraq was hit by six bombs today, killing at least eight people and wounding lots more. The bombs were targeted to Kirkuk, a city in the country’s disputed north. The blasts hit during prayer time at Shiite mosques, suggesting sectarian motives may be behind the violence. No group has yet claimed responsibility. (Source)

Unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3

The Labor Department reported that employers added a mere 96,000 jobs and more people stopped looking for work during the month of August. This figure defines the unemployed as those actively seeking jobs. Simply, Americans have become discouraged. A large portion of the jobs that were added in the last month was low-paying positions. In his speech yesterday President Obama recognized the slow pace of economic growth during his administrative years, but he acknowledged “it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over decades.” (Source)
