Spice investigation at IOW Tobacco Shop

On Thursday a nine-month investigation in Isle of Wight County ended. After receiving many reports, undercover authorities said they successfully purchased the drug at the Carrollton Tobacco Shop. At least four young people required medical help after using the drug. Two people have already been arrested in connection of the sale and distribution of the drug spice “Spice” at the store, while authorities continue to search for the third. (Source)

Obama’s Convention Speech Moved Indoors

Although Obama was scheduled to accept the nomination at the open-air Bank of America Stadium in “rain or shine,” the entire program will now take place indoors, along with Joe Biden’s speech. The events will now be held at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Obama will speak to about 15,000 people, a far smaller audience than had originally been expected for the outdoor stadium. (Source)

Magnitude-7.6 Earthquake Shakes Costa Rica

On Wednesday a powerful earthquake jolted Costa Rica for about 30 seconds. There are no reports of major damage, although many houses collapsed, several highways were blocked and there was at least one death from a heart attack. Officials warned of a possible trsunami and 5,000 people were evacuated although they were allowed to return by mid-day. In the last forty years, the region has been shaken by 30 earthquakes magnitude-6 and larger. The last deadly quake that rocked Costa Rica occurred in 2009—a magnitude 6.1 that killed 40 people. Food Insecurity Rates Unchanged Since 2010

In 2011, 22 percent of all American kids were living in households that could not adequately feed them. Although this confirms that a humanitarian crisis still looms in America, one can find some relief in knowing that the food insecurity rates have not risen since 2010, despite the fear that U.S. poverty could rise to levels not seen since 1960s. 57 percent of these families have reported that in the previous month they had participated in one or more of the three largest federal food and nutrition assistance programs.
