Republicans Push Bill to Keep Foreign Scholars in the U.S

This past Tuesday, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives that would increase the number of permanent resident visas for graduating foreign students that study science and/or technology. Republican leaders are hoping to pass this bill in order to improve legal immigration before the election in November. At this time, foreign graduating students must either leave the country or dive into the world of temporary visas, which do not always lead to permanent visas. (Source)

Life in Hampton Roads is Improving, Poll Says 1

Old Dominion University recently took their third annual survey of life in Hampton Roads, and the results were nothing but positive. Two-thirds of respondents rated quality of life in Hampton Roads as good or excellent, which is a vast improvement from last year. Jesse Richman, Director of ODU’s Social Science Research Center, said that the newfound optimism is most likely due to the improving economy. (Source)

French Magazine Runs Controversial Cartoons

A series of cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad published in a French magazine this morning enraged Muslims and French leaders, particularly Francois Hollande, the President of France. Many of the illustrations depicted a nude Muhammad striking inappropriate, pornographic poses. The French government was appalled that such controversial graphics were published in the current tense environment. As a precautionary measure, France is closing its embassy in twenty countries on Friday, the Muslim Day of Prayer. (Source)
