European Union Wins Nobel Peace Prize

The European Union was awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize today. This came as a surprise to many as the European Union is currently struggling with massive debt and the threat of disintegration. The 27-nation union won the Prize as a reward for its work in promoting democracy since World War II. According to some, the Prize is a message to Europe of all that is has accomplished, and to prevent the continent from disintegrating. The International Crisis Group stated, "The EU has been (...) one of the greatest conflict resolution mechanisms ever devised." (Source)

New Orleans Restricts Hurricane Katrina Tours

Bus tours through New Orleans show tourists several areas of the city, but the Lower Ninth Ward, where Hurricane Katrina inflicted its worst damage, is now off limits. According to officials, buses damage newly paved roads. Touring such a ravaged area has also been described as "disaster voyeurism" and an invasion of privacy. Bus tours have been a balancing act for New Orleans, as approximately nine million tourists visit the city every year, eager to see hurricane recovery efforts. Residents, however, are tired of being treated as sideshow attractions. (Source)
