Hampton Roads School Increase Security after Connecticut Shooting

Local elementary schools have added additional security on Monday following the Connecticut school massacre. Officials say the move is only a precaution. Newport News Public schools have also increased security. Each elementary school will have a security guard and police will visit schools more often. The principals will soon be reviewing their crisis management plans. Suffolk Public Schools have also increased the presence of police both inside and outside of schools. They’ve also asked the principals to make sure that they comply with current security procedures and discus their school crisis plan with faculty and staff. (Source)

White House: Gun violence is a complex problem

According to the White House, curbing gun violence is a complex problem that will require a “comprehensive solution” including addressing gun control measures. Spokesman Jay Carney says that gun control is not the only solution to preventing shootings like the tragedy at a Connecticut elementary school on Friday. No single piece of legislation or single action will fully address the problem. In the upcoming weeks, our president will engage the American people and lawmakers on this issue, and will meet with law enforcement officials and mental health professionals. Obama plans to use the “power” of his office to tackle gun violence. (Source)
