Navy SEAL killed in rescue identified

The Department of Defense identified an elite U.S. special forces team member killed during a rescue operation in Afghanistan. Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas D. Checque, 28, died of combat-related injuries sustained on Dec. 8 while supporting operations in Afghanistan. Checque, a highly-decorated combat veteran, was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare command. He was from Monroeville, PA but currently lived in Virginia Beach. (Source)

Elmo actor faces sex abuse claim from fourth accuser

A fourth man is accusing Kevin Clash, the voice of “Sesame Street’s’ Elmo character, of sexual abuse. In a lawsuit filed today, the accuser, who is using the name John Doe, claims that Clash befriended him in the mid 1990s, flew him from Miami to New York and abused him during this time. Jeff Herman, the victim’s attorney, said, “According to our lawsuit, Kevin Clash knowingly paid to transport a minor across state lines for the purpose of satisfying his sexual interests.” (Source)

Man gets life for near fatal beating of Suffolk officer

Joe Louis Staton, 43, of Portsmouth, was sentenced today to life plus 40 years in the near-fatal beating of Suffolk police officer James Winslow last May. Judge William C. Andrews handed down the maximum sentence on a charge of aggravated assault and a list of other charges, calling it “without a doubt the most heinous, vicious, senseless and unprovoked attack I have ever seen…If you would do this to a police officer, what would you do to an ordinary citizen?” Staton pleaded guilty in October to aggravated malicious wounding, malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, grand larceny and seven other charges.
