Bank robbery leads to high speed chase

Portsmouth Police are investigating a bank robbery that happened on Thursday, May 30, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wells Fargo in the 5800 block of High Street in Portsmouth. Police spokeswoman Jan Clark said the suspect was wearing a mask and armed with a handgun. The tellers gave the man an undisclosed amount of money, and he left in a van. A high speed chase began when one of the responding officers saw the van on High Street and Hartford Street. The chase ended near the Red Roof Inn in the 100 block of Ballard Court in Virginia Beach. Clark said a man was taken into custody. No injuries were reported at the Wells Fargo. (Source)

Man accused of raping 13-year-old

David Fox Broadhurst, Sr., 53, is being charged for more than 30 sex charges for offenses alleged by a teen.  Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department said the Chesapeake man has been charged with four counts of rape, seven counts of sodomy, seven counts of object sexual penetration and 15 counts of aggravated sexual battery. At this time there is only one victim, who was 13 when the crimes occurred. The victim is now 17. The investigation began May 7 and is ongoing. Broadhurst is currently being held at the Chesapeake City Jail. (Source)

Chicago Sun-Times lays off photo staff

The Chicago Sun-Times laid off its entire photo staff on Thursday, May 30. The staff included about 20 full-time employees. This lay-off is supposed to take part in the Sun-Time’s effort to keep up with its “digitally savvy customers,” meaning their focus will now be video. The Chicago Newspaper Guild’s executive director denounced the paper’s actions as a “terrible move.” (Source)

Tractor-trailer crash kills 7

A Tractor-trailer and minivan collided in upstate New York on Wednesday, May 29, killing seven people, four of whom were under the age of 10. The trailer broke from its rig on a two-lane highway outside Syracuse, New Jersey. The trailer then crossed over the center line and crashed into the minivan. Only one person survived from the crash and was taken to the hospital in Syracuse. The survivor is currently unknown. (Source)
