One-man filibuster blocks Senate vote on CIA Director

In an effort yesterday to delay the Senate vote on the President’s nominee for CIA director, John Brennan, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul launched a 13-hour-long filibuster in the Senate. The topic of Senator Paul’s long speech was the drone program, which has come under controversy for the expansive power it gives by allowing the president the authority to issue drone strikes on suspected terrorists on U.S. soil. Paul’s filibuster successfully blocked the vote on the nomination, which may now been drawn out until the weekend. (Source)

California woman mauled to death by lion

A 24-year-old intern at Cat Haven in Fresno County, CA, was killed yesterday after being fatally mauled by one of the lions. Dianna Hanson had been an intern at the wild animal park since January 2. Authorities are trying to determine why Hanson was inside the lion enclosure and what happened to provoke the attack. The facility is closed on Wednesdays, and only one other worker was present at the time of the attack. The lion was shot and killed when authorities could not lure it away from Hanson’s body to try to save her. The intern died at the scene. (Source)
