Obama, congressional leaders fail to reach deal on sequester

President Obama acknowledged Friday that federal budget cuts are here with no end in sight and warned that the outcome would harm the economy. In a final attempt to find common ground with congressional leaders, the efforts were fruitless. The president continued to press for higher taxes as part of a deal, and republicans continued to refuse, clearing the way for $85 billion in cuts this fiscal year and $1.2 trillion over the next decade. The reductions are likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future. There had been speculation that they might be adjusted later this month when lawmakers must agree on a new deal to fund the government or risk a shutdown; however Obama made it clear Friday that he would avoid a shutdown even if it meant allowing across-the-board cuts, known as the sequester, to continue. Florida calls off search for man swallowed by sinkhole

Authorities in Florida gave up the search Saturday for Jeff Bush, who is presumed dead after a 50–60-foot sinkhole opened beneath the bedroom of his family’s suburban Tampa home on Thursday, swallowing him up. Sinkholes are common in the state since it lies on bedrock made of limestone or other carbonate rock that can be eaten away by acidic groundwater, forming voids that collapse when the rock can no longer support the weight of what’s above it. Mike Merrill, county administrator for Hillsborough County, told reporters on Saturday that at this point, it’s really not possible to recover the body. (Source)

DUI suspect charged in deadly crash

On Saturday evening 35-year-old Michael Douglas McIntyre of Norfolk was charged with DUI, involuntary manslaughter and driving with a suspended license in a deadly crash that killed one of his passengers in Virginia Beach. McIntyre was operating a 2000 Lincoln LS at a high rate of speed on Ansel Lane when he crossed the street, ran off the roadway and hit several trees. McIntyre and one passenger were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A second passenger, Robert Martin Lancaster, 44, of Norfolk died at the scene. McIntyre is being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond. (Source)
