Seven Marines killed in Nevada depot explosion

An explosion at the Hawthorne Army Depot in the Nevada desert left seven Marines dead and seven others injured last night. The cause of the blast, which happened during a training exercise at around 10 p.m. PDT, is still being investigated; however, a military official has claimed the accident occurred when a 60mm mortar round prematurely exploded in a mortar launcher. The marines killed and hurt are from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The injured have been airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. (Source)

Newport News gas station catches fire

A fire erupted at a Newport News gas station around 8 a.m. this morning when a vehicle struck one of the pumps. The Newport News Police Department said the car had gone off the roadway and then struck the gas pump at the Shell Gas Station on Warwick Boulevard, causing the fire to start. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident and destruction of property. The suspect is already wanted for outstanding warrants in Hampton. He allegedly told police that he blacked out and woke up when he hit the pump. (Source)

Fugitive wanted for home invasion caught in Franklin

A Virginia Beach fugitive was captured in Franklin today around 8 a.m. in the 900 block of Pretlow Street. Twenty-eight-year-old Deron Anthony Snow was wanted in connection with a violent home invasion in Virginia Beach in November, in which a man was shot and his mother jumped out of a window to escape the shooter. A second suspect in the case, Teon Capel, was arrested March 5. Snow was charged with robbery, abduction, conspiracy, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. (Source)

Loudon teenager taken for intruder fatally shot

A teenager killed in Loudon County early Sunday morning has been identified as 16-year-old Caleb Gordley. Gordley had snuck out of his house Saturday night to go to a party. After a night of drinking, the teenager tried to sneak back home but ended up in the wrong house. The homeowner, Donald West Wilder II, heard his burglar alarm and fired a warning shot at Gordley, telling him to leave. The teenager allegedly did not listen to the request and was then shot and killed. No charges have been filed. (Source)
