Obama, congressional leaders fail to reach deal on sequester

The nation’s sequester—or automatic spending cuts put into law by the Budget Control Act—will be going into effect at 11:59 p.m. on March 1 and will cut $1.2 trillion form the United State’s deficit. However, congressional leaders have failed to come up with a deal. Obama suggested in a news conference that Congress should replace the automatic cuts, but the White House doesn’t agree. Obama said Republicans shouldn’t be choosing spending cuts and should instead consider reducing tax breaks for the wealthy. The $1.2 trillion in spending cuts would occur over a span of 10 years, with billions of dollars being cut between now and the month of September. Failing to reach a deal on these budget cuts could affect many workers for the government. (Source)
