NN Park pavilion destroyed in fire

Early Sunday morning, a fire broke out at the pavilion adjacent to the Deer Run Golf Course in Newport News Park. Firefighters responded to the call around 5:45 a.m. and found the pavilion engulfed in flames. No one was hurt in the fire, and firefighters had the scene under control in about an hour. The estimated damage to this banquet hall and meeting place exceeds $500,000. The fire department is still looking into the cause of the fire. (Source)

Congress to fund flooding study in Norfolk

Norfolk residents should get ready to hang up their umbrellas and put away their rain boots. On Friday, Congress agreed to back a plan that may solve Norfolk’s flooding problems. Norfolk city officials will be working with the Army Corp of Engineers to identify the causes of flooding and propose ways to solve the flooding problem. (Source)

According to the governor’s office, Virginia will post a $129.2 million revenue surplus for fiscal year 2012, which ended on June 30. The revenues increased by 5.4 percent over the previous year and exceeded the forecast growth by almost 1 percent. Gov. Bob McDonnell will discuss the final revenue report later today. (Source)

James Holmes charged with murder, attempted murder in movie theater shootings

Colorado prosecutors formally charged James Holmes with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder in court today. Holmes is the prime suspect in the Colorado movie theater shooting spree that took place July 20 at The Dark Knight Rises premiere.  The attack left 12 dead and 58 injured. Holmes is facing two charges of murder for each victim: one for acting after deliberation with intent and another for acting with malice. (Source)
