New retailer may help struggling Downtown Norfolk

Urban Outfitters opened its doors yesterday on Granby Street. The three-story store offers much for shoppers, but also for the struggling downtown area. The Downtown Norfolk Council is hoping that Urban Outfitters will draw other businesses to the area. (Source)

Excessive heat warning in effect for the Southside of Hampton Roads

With heat index values between 110 and 115 degrees, the area will be under a heat advisory from noon to 7 p.m. A cold front is expected later today, which may bring rain and a chance of severe storms. (Source)

Tonight’s opening ceremony will be a star-studded event

60,000 spectators are expected to be at London’s opening ceremony tonight. Queen Elizabeth II will officially open the games at the Olympic Stadium. Other royals in attendance will include Prince Harry, Prince William and wife, Kate. First lady, Michelle Obama will represent the U.S., along with the presumed Republican candidate, Mitt Romney. London press criticizes Romney for voicing Olympic security concerns

Britons are more enthusiastic for the Olympic games after Mitt Romney’s recent visit, which sparked outrage after the presidential candidate said logistical problems were “disconcerting.” Various headlines from the British press have criticized Romney for his comments and stated that he doesn’t have the experience necessary since he helped organize the games in Salt Lake City, a much smaller venue. Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson have used the comments to rally citizens around the games. (Source)
