Steps forward in bringing The Tide to Virginia Beach

Move Hampton Roads, a political action committee, has recently raised $300,000 to help a referendum that will be proposed to voters in November regarding the expansion of the light-rail system. On Thursday, the PAC received its largest contribution so far from Townebank for the amount of $25,000. Although this is a step forward, the light rail may not come to Virginia Beach even if the referendum is passed. It will mostly be determined by federal funding, Mayor Will Sessoms stated. (Source)

80,000 jobs added in June

The U.S. job market was weak for the third straight month, with only 80,000 jobs added for the month of June and an unemployment rate remaining at 8.2 percent. When compared to the 150,000 jobs added each month in the first half of the year, the new numbers display signs of a still weak economy. However, the average work week has increased to 34.5 hours, and hourly pay has increased 2 percent during the last year. The economy will play a large role for many voters in the upcoming presidential election. (Source)

The recent high temperatures have put a strain on the electrical system, as many areas have faced heat advisories and record temperatures. (Source)

Judge sets George Zimmerman’s bail at $1 million

A Florida judge set Zimmerman’s bail at $1 million after he and his wife misled the court about how much money they had. The couple didn’t tell the court about the $135, 000 in donations that Zimmerman had made from a website to help with his defense. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a case that has gained national attention and questioned as a hate crime. (Source)
