Residents in a Virginia Beach neighborhood awake to vandalism

Several residents of the Charlestown Lakes neighborhood awoke to black spray paint on their cars and fences. Families who have lived in the neighborhood awhile say that vandalism is common on the backs of fences and businesses in the area. Those whose property was affected face hundreds of dollars in repairs, and it’s still unknown who was behind the vandalism. (Source)

Woman sentenced to 16 years for embezzling more than $1 million from Chesapeake company

A former employee of Higgerson-Buchanan Inc. was sentenced to 16 years in prison Monday. Shelly Annette Spencer, who worked with the company for 23 years, has embezzled almost $20,000 a month since 2004. Spencer spent the money on trips to Atlantic City, new trucks and campers and bills. (Source)

iPhone 5 rumored for release this October

Apple is expected to release it’s newest iPhone this fall, with most improvements involving the screen of the smart phone. Current iPhone users have a 3.5 inch screen, but it’s expected that the new phone will have a taller screen in order to compete with other smart phones. As far as quality, it’s also rumored that the phone will have a better display and include a near-field communication chip, which could lead to a version of Google Wallet for Apple. (Source)

Committee rules that gays still banned from Boy Scouts

A committee for the Boy Scouts of America have decided to continue banning gays from the organization. The 11-member committee was created two years ago to discuss the policy, which applies to scouts and leaders. President of the Human Rights Campaign, Chad Griffin, says that the organization is sending the message that only some young people are valued and that they’re teaching “division and intolerance.” The Boy Scouts say that the committee came to a unanimous decision, and members were of diverse “perspectives and opinions.” (Source)

Final Batman movie premiered in New York

Stars of The Dark Knight Rises premiered the film Monday in New York. The much anticipated film from Christopher Nolan, is the last of the trilogy. The cast includes Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman. The Dark Knight Rises will be in theaters this Friday. (Source)
