Romney to Visit Nauticus

Just weeks after President Obama’s visit to the battleground state of Virginia, Mitt Romney’s campaign has announced that the Republican nominee will speak at Nauticus this Saturday. The appearance is part of the “Romney for a Stronger Middle Class” bus tour. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. and the rally will begin at 8:45 a.m. (Source)

$3 Million Virginian Pilot Verdict Set Aside

A circuit judge has vacated a $3 million libel verdict against The Virginian Pilot. Phillip Webb, assistant principal of Oscar Smith High School, filed the suit claiming that an article published on December 18, 2009 falsely accused him of abusing his power within the school system. According to Webb, the article erroneously implied that his son, Kevin, was the recipient of preferential treatment and that the teenager’s school did not punish him for assaulting another student’s father. The judge denied Webb compensation because there was no “clear and convincing evidence” of purposeful malice. (Source)

Sikhs Reflect on Religious Violence

New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg visited a Sikh temple in Queens in a show of solidarity for the religion, currently visible in the media because of a Wisconsin man’s brutal attack on Sikh temple congregants. Post-911, some Sikhs experienced discrimination because their religion requires them to wear turbans and grow beards, attributes that some Americans associate with militant Islam. In the wake of the recent attack, members of the Sikh religion question the discrimination and violence that they have experienced, both firsthand and as a religion. (Source)
