2012 predicted as most expensive year for motorists

Gasoline prices have been rising sharply since mid-July. This drastic price hike will likely make 2012 the costliest year for Americans. The national average is up 30 cents since mid-July and is higher than the average was a year ago in 39 states. Some believe the national average will hit $3.90 before dropping off around Labor Day. State workers to receive bonus in December

They haven’t had a pay raise in five years, but this December, Virginia state employees will receive a one-time 3 percent bonus. The bonus is a result of the $448.5 million surplus Gov. McDonnell has reported. The 3 percent bonus comes as a reward for sound management and successful saving strategies. (Source)

New math SOL more difficult for students

Virginia education officials revised the 2011-2012 math SOL to be more challenging for students taking the test. The goal was to better prepare students for college or post-graduation employment. The state Department of Education released the test results on Tuesday. As expected, the test results were down considerably from the previous year’s figures. However, education officials maintain that the rates provide a solid foundation for future achievement. (Source)

Pinterest releases new cell phone apps

Along with the iPhone, Android and iPad users can now enjoy Pinterest, a visual bookmarking tool, on their mobile devices. A week after dropping the invite-only requirement, the company has again widened it accessibility to more users. Currently, Pinterest has 23.3 million users in the United States, though the number is now expected to increase. (Source)
