Former Norfolk police officer sentenced for drug charges

Former Norfolk police officer Kristin Wayne Harris, 38, pled guilty in November to selling drugs including steroids, syringes and marijuana to an undercover Virginia Beach detective last summer. After prosecutors withdrew 11 related drug charges, a circuit court judge this morning sentenced Harris to 100 hours of community service for two felony drug charges. Harris resigned from the Norfolk Police Department, where he’d served 11 years, after his arrest. (Source)

46 killed in Afghanistan

Suicide bombers launched several attacks in southwestern Afghanistan today, killing policemen and shoppers buying food to break their daily Ramadan fast. Combined with a market bombing in northern Afghanistan, this has been the deadliest day for civilians this year. There were no claims of responsibility, but the attacks on opposite ends of the country came as Taliban insurgents and allies step up attacks while international troops hand over security responsibility to Afghan forces. Authorities said the casualties would have ben higher had they not learned of the plot before; police killed two would-be attackers last night and captured another three this morning. (Source)

Groupon stock drops after dismal earnings report

Groupon’s stock fell 27% today as analysts slashed targets and ratings on the online deals company after it reported its first-ever quarter-to-quarter decline in gross billings. Although Groupon blames the weak economy in Europe and unfavorable currency-exchange rates, analysts blame online deals fatigue. Since Groupon first pioneered the online daily deals, other businesses such as LivingSocial and SocialBuy have jumped on the daily deal bandwagon, and the deals flood inboxes multiple times a day.” (Source)
