Kroger to buy Harris Teeter

Kroger announced this morning that it plans to buy Harris Teeter for $2.44 billion and assume about $100 million of the smaller company’s debt. This merger would make Hampton Roads one of a few markets where the two grocers overlap—in some cases with stores right next to each other. Kroger officials said the merger would allow it entry or expansion for markets in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast where it now has no or few stores. Kroger has seven locations in Hampton Roads and is set to open the region’s first Kroger Marketplace—a larger store format that sells furniture and jewelry in addition to groceries—later this month in Virginia Beach and has two other locations for that concept in the works in Portsmouth and Suffolk. Cleveland’s three missing women thank the public for their support

In a four-minute video, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight thank the community for its support after their escape from a decade of captivity. The women appear upbeat, and two of them discuss having the strength to move on. The video was released at midnight and marks the first time the women have addressed the public after being found. “I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and with my head held high and with my feet firmly on the ground,” Knight says. “Walking hand in hand with my best friend, I will not let the situation define who I am. I will define the situation.” (Source)
