Drowning at Virginia Beach Oceanfront

A teenager died Saturday after vanishing in the surf at the Oceanfront. Emergency personnel responded shortly before 2:15 p.m. to a call for a boy who had been seen struggling in the water near 79th Street. Rescue efforts were switched to recovery efforts at about 3:30 p.m., and the boy was found in the water about a half-hour later near 78th Street. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. (Source)

At least 38 dead in Italy bus crash

A coach has plunged off a flyover in southern Italy leaving at least 38 people dead in the country’s worst road accident for decades. The coach hit several vehicles before smashing through a barrier and toppling down a steep slope near Avellino. At least 10 were injured. The coach was taking about 50 people, including children, back to Naples following a pilgrimage. The cause of the accident is not yet known. (Source)

$50 million jewelry heist

An armed jewel thief entered the Carlton InterContinental Hotel along the French Riviera Sunday morning, eluded security guards and well-heeled guests and left with a haul of jewelry worth perhaps $50 million. The theft comes just days after the Swiss police announced that a member of the Pink Panther gang of jewel thieves had escaped from a prison in Switzerland. (Source)
