Lawmakers unveil new assault weapons ban

Democratic lawmakers introduced a proposal today for a new assault weapons ban. The legislation, called the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013, is similar to the one that expired in 2004 but has more far-reaching implications. More than 150 specific firearms would be banned, including semiautomatic guns that have magazines with the capacity to hold over 10 rounds. Military-style features like pistol grips would also constitute an illegal firearm. A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on gun control will consider the proposed ban next Wednesday. (Source)

Greater chance of southside snow Friday

The cold weather was worth it for many Hampton Roads residents today with the arrival of some snow flurries. Around 10 a.m., snow was being reported from Newport News and Virginia Beach. Although the snow did not seem to be sticking to the ground in much of Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore saw a few inches of dusting. The cold weather will continue into the weekend and scattered snow showers are expected to form again tomorrow afternoon. (Source)

Military leaders lift ban on women in combat roles

The ban on women serving in combat positions in the U.S. Military was lifted today. Women will now have access to thousands of front-line and elite commando jobs. The decision was made by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, overturning a 1994 rule banning women from serving in smaller ground combat units. Military services have until 2016 to seek exceptions for positions they believe should remain closed to female soldiers. Women currently make up 15 percent of the military. (Source)

A 911 call that placed the University of Virginia-Wise on lockdown yesterday has turned out to be a hoax. Student Bryant Alexander Hairston is being charged for falsely reporting seeing a gunman on the school’s campus. The school was put on lockdown and searched building-by-building by police officers from several departments. Hairston reportedly confessed to making up the story while being interviewed by officers.
