America’s 57th presidential inauguration today

President Barack Obama was publicly sworn into office today at the nation’s 57th Inauguration. The ceremony began with an invocation by civil rights figure Myrlie Evers-Williams. Biden and Obama both took the oath for their second terms, and the president delivered his second inaugural address. The speech focused heavily on coming together as a country and making progress toward solving the issues facing the nation. Among the performers for the ceremony were Kelly Clarkson and the U.S. Marine Band, Beyonce, James Taylor and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. The public inaugural ceremony is a follow-up to the official swearing-in of the president and VP, which took place privately on Sunday. (Source)

Woman’s death in Chesapeake ruled as homicide

The death of 26-year-old Rachel M. Abshire in Chesapeake has been classified as a homicide, police announced this morning. At 11 a.m. yesterday, police responded to a report that a woman had been found dead in her apartment in the 10th block of Kingsbridge Way S. The investigation is ongoing, and no other information is available at this time. (Source)

Algeria says at least 37 foreigners dead in siege

Algeria’s prime minister said today that at least 37 foreign hostages died during the four-day siege in his country, a steep increase from earlier estimates, and the U.S. government confirmed that three Americans were among then. Algerian officials have been saying that few if any of the attackers are believed to have been Algerian. However the prime minister said the leader of the militant band that seized the gas field facility, an Algerian whom he identified as Bencheneb Mohamed Amine, was among the attackers killed during the crisis.
