Pope steps down in historical resignation

Pope Benedict XVI officially stepped down from the papacy at an emotional ceremony in Rome today. Benedict is the first pope in 600 years to resign from his duty. The doors of the Castel Gandolfo palace were shut around 2 p.m. EST, symbolizing the end of the current papacy. In his final speech as pope, Benedict pledged obedience to his successor and promised to continue working for the good of the church in his retirement. Benedict has cited health issues as his reason for resigning. (Source)

Chesapeake pastor charged in internet scandal

Haden Conrad, A Chesapeake pastor, was charged yesterday with computer solicitation of a child under 15. The investigation into Conrad was lead by the Chesapeake Police Internet Crimes Against Children unit. Officers served search warrants at the pastor’s home and at the Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church today. Conrad has since been arrested and has lost his position as chaplain for the Chesapeake Police Department. (Source)

Cutter Bear catches fire in Portsmouth

The Coast Guard Cutter Bear, the 270-foot medium-endurance cutter located in Portsmouth, caught fire this afternoon while it was moored at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth. The fire was contained to the Damage Control section of the ship and there has been no report of injuries from the incident. (Source)

Las Vegas shooter captured in LA

Felon Ammar Harris was arrested in North Hollywood today for a shooting and subsequent car crash that ended in the deaths of three people on February 21. The 26-year-old self-named pimp had allegedly been in an argument with aspiring rapper Wayne Cherry Jr. before firing five shots into the man’s sports car. Cherry was killed and the car slammed into a taxi, killing the driver and passenger. Five others were injured. (Source)
