Man and woman arrested in Norfolk bank robberies

Sandra S. Fenton, 23, of Virginia Beach, and Duane P. Goodson, 33, of Norfolk, have been charged in two recent bank robberies in Norfolk and named as suspects in a third in Chesapeake. About 1 p.m. yesterday a woman entered a SunTrust bank on W. Little Creek Road, implied to a teller that she had a weapon and demanded money. After taking the money, she jumped into a four-door green Lexus driven by a man. Around 4:45 Fenton arrived in Virginia Beach for a probation and parole appointment and was identified as a suspect in the SunTrust robbery and taken to a police station. Police arrested Goodson Monday evening in the 1000 block of Mahone Ave. in Norfolk. They’re also being charged in a July 23 robbery of a PNC Bank on N. Military Highway. The pair face two counts each of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. (Source)

Israel frees Palestinian prisoners

Israel has freed a group of 26 Palestinian prisoners, whose release was agreed as part of the deal that allowed peace talks to resume. The prisoners, most of whom carried out attacks more than 20 years ago, were driven out of a jail in white minibuses with tinted windows. About half are being taken to Gaza and half to the West Bank. Palestinian and Israeli negotiators began direct talks two weeks ago for the first time in three years. (Source)

North Korea says it made a smartphone

North Korea says it has produced its first home-grown smartphone, but experts have disputed its origins. The Arirang handset was shown to leader Kim Jong-un during a factory tour. The country has made a mobile network since 2008, but activity is heavily monitored and restricted. Martyn Williams, an expert on North Korean technology, noted that the smartphone was unlikely to have been made in the country, that no actual manufacturing was shown and that the device was “probably made to order by a Chinese manufacturer and shipped to the May 11 Factory where they are inspected before going on sale.” (Source)
