Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

When I want to explore and learn about plants and trees I enjoy Botanical Gardens. I go there a lot, and you can go there all year. The people are friendly there. I liked the Enchanted Forest that was there over the summer. There was a tree stump checkerboard, and we were able to create homes for gnomes. They had an art project where I got to paint white paper roses red just like in Alice in Wonderland. I really enjoy The Chrysler Museum of Art. They have so much to see, and I learn about some of it in school. We learned about Egypt last year, and I got to see real mummies! I went to their camp over the summer, and they gave us fun activities to do. The Norfolk Zoo has very cool animals; I really enjoy going there and just watching the animals walk around. Baby lions were one of my favorites. Red pandas were cute and neat but didn’t really look like pandas to me.

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

The Norfolk Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Mount Trashmore. In the summer I have lots of fun with my friends and family at Ocean Breeze water park. The wave pool is the best.

Name a favorite pastime, hobby or organization you enjoy being a part of.

Soccer is my favorite sport. I also enjoy piano and drawing. I am part of NYSL soccer league and played on the Tornados. I made four goals this past season.

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

When my friends and I want to go out and have a great time, we head to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. They have a great variety of bars and restaurants including Waterman’s, Mahi Mah’s, CP Shucker’s and Catch 31. And when we get that urge to dance we always end up at Lunasea!

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

Some may not view this as an activity, but I really enjoy the outdoor festivals in downtown Norfolk including the wine and beer festivals in the spring. Hanging out by the water, socializing with friends and tasting some drinks from around the region ... it’s a great kick off to the summer season.

Name a favorite pastime, hobby or organization you enjoy being a part of.

I like to run, and I enjoy participating in the local races throughout the year. This area is known for some of the best races around, including the Shamrock Sportsfest, Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon and the Wicked Blue Moon 10k. The people who show up for these events are, in my opinion, some of the best people around. They are supportive, energetic, enthusiastic and kind.

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

I head down to the Oceanfront. Especially during the summer, if I’m in the mood to eat outside, why not do it with the view of the ocean as my backdrop? It also provides a great place for my wife and me to take the children to run off their energy. There are free summer events, the playgrounds, the water itself, bikes or just taking the football or Frisbee to throw around.

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

Fishing for Big Red Drum on the Little Island Park Fishing Pier at Sandbridge during the months of September and October. I used to think that in order for you catch a 50-pound fish, you had to charter a boat, go out and get lucky. However, when the Big Red Drum make their fall migration to the South, it’s a different story. The back of the pier fills up with people (mostly locals) that, in many cases, plan their vacation time just to fish for Red Drum. On the pier, you’ll find a camaraderie that exists with all the anglers that support each other in catching. By far, it’s something that I have never seen duplicated elsewhere and an activity that I look forward to every year.

I am proud to be a part of the Downtown 100 (DT100) for Norfolk. This is a group of 100 volunteers who either work or live in downtown Norfolk and promote and support the growth of this area, as well as the growth of our members internally.

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

When I want to have a great laid-back time, I head to Razzo— the Cheers of East Beach, only with better food. The waitstaff is rocking, the food is amazing and Razzo’s Sam Malone, Butch Germano, is never without a story. When I want to have a good time with a group of friends, The Boot can’t be beat. With its local flare and veggie options, there is something for everyone. The Wednesday night specials are a good excuse to catch up with friends.

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

Anything on the beach. This past summer, it happened to be hooping. I’ll admit—it had been a while since I last hula hooped, but after a few practice runs it all came back to me. Excellent way to get in that extra ab work.

The yoga community here is a huge part of my life. The studios are so supportive of one another, and you often see the same patrons practicing at many of them. Studying with the teachers here has been most rewarding. I also enjoy taking writing workshops with The Muse. I have not only been able to grow as a writer, but I have also developed meaningful friendships with people whose paths I may have not otherwise crossed.

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

I really enjoy going out to eat. My partner, Bryan, and I eat weekly, sometimes twice a week, at Plaza Azteca on Warwick Boulevard. It’s just a fun place that is affordable and has a great Spanish-speaking wait staff. I also think that Kappo Nara is the best Japanese cuisine in the area—the food is glorious, and so many of the customers are Japanese, which to me means that the eats must be excellent and authentic. For Norfolk, it’s the No Frill Bar and Grill, which is where we take people before seeing a movie at the Naro (the best art house theater ever).

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

There is no doubt that the best place to be outdoors in the area is the Noland Trail at The Mariners’ Museum Park. One can walk or run, people are friendly—it constitutes good physical exercise with excellent scenery. I am particularly taken with the park’s bald eagles and ospreys, which I could watch every day.

I have to say that I most enjoy being a part of the Book Club. It began as a group of people from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula. Now in its 25th year, the Book Club (it has no name beyond that) is a collection of voracious readers from widely diverse backgrounds who like to read and discuss the classics.

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

There are many great places in the area to meet up with friends for drinks and dinner, but I especially like to entertain at home or to be entertained at the home of one of my friends. The highlight of the year for our group of friends is my New Year’s Eve bash. I have to make sure to invite my neighbors so I don’t run into any trouble, but it goes to show that we are truly still young at heart.

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

Boating, kayaking and floating in the pool are my favorites. The Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department offers an annual Paddle to the Border event that can’t be beat. Some people look at it as a test of endurance, but quite frankly it is a delightfully social afternoon, and there’s no question you’re burning calories.

Name a favorite pastime, hobby or organization you enjoy being a part of.

I enjoy painting and art classes, and I am actively involved with The Mogul Ski Club, which is really about a lot more than just skiing. It is actually how I met my husband, so you can say that the club has a special place in both our hearts. I am the activities chairman for the club, and I have a lot of fun organizing parties, happy hour get-togethers, day trips and weekend getaways to interesting places around the state. I also see to it that there are bicycle outings, golf groups, kayaking expeditions and just about anything else the members are interested in.

The Bier Garden on High Street in Portsmouth.

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

The Parade of Sail, which is part of the annual Harborfest in Norfolk.

The Steeple to Steeple Project. [Burgess explained that this is a tour of historic churches in Portsmouth, including the recently restored Chevra T’helim synagogue, on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The tour features examples of fine stained glass, statuary, woodwork and a host of links to historical events. It also includes a meal and an organ concert at Trinity Church, which has the largest pipe organ in Hampton Roads.]

By Montague Gammon III

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

I don’t really define anything I do as a ‘great time!’ I like anything to do with the theater. I’ve just come back from the Palace Theatre [in Cape Charles]. [Mrs. Cardano was directing a production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, which ran two weekends at the Palace Theatre in mid-November.]

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

We live right on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s very beautiful—I like to walk on the beach.

Name a favorite pastime, hobby or organization you enjoy being a part of.

Anything to do with the theater, particularly directing.

Where do you go when you just want to have a great time?

When I was younger we used to go to the Shrine dances on Saturday nights. Nowadays when we want to have a good time, we go to a good Italian restaurant. I also really enjoy bowling in the Monday morning league at the alley on Little Creek Road, which is composed of all seniors, both men and women.

What is the best outdoor activity in the area?

Golfing. We have so many great golf courses in the area.

Name a favorite pastime, hobby or organization you enjoy being a part of.

The Masons. I’m a member of Atlantic Lodge #2 AF&AM and have taken an active part in my lodge and held many offices there over the past 50 years. The friendships I have made with the outstanding people there have meant a lot to me.
