2014's COVA IDEA HOUSE

Move over “Idea Houses,” there’s a new idea in town.

Joining the ranks of prestigious architectural, interior and landscape design showcase homes around the nation—Coastal Living Magazine’s, Southern Living Magazine’s, and more—is our very own Coastal Virginia Idea House, a partnership between Coastal Virginia Magazine and Stephen Alexander Homes.

Ready for its “close up” in October, this 4,000-square-foot house is taking shape at its premier location on the 3rd hole of the Princess Anne Country Club golf course at 35 ½ Street and Holly Road in Virginia Beach. Stephen Quick IV, of Stephen Alexander Homes, reports that the framing process is nearing completion with the home’s overall style and size becoming ever more tangible.

Prior to beginning construction, much site work was done to elevate the half-acre lot while giving it a sense of “terrain.” This extensive preparation work served practical purposes, like creating positive drainage, as well as aesthetic ones. As Quick notes, the new and improved setting “enhances how the home will live on the land.”

With an asking price of just under $1 million unfurnished—though all furnishings and accessories will be for sale—the emerging “outward expression” of this home’s turn-ofthe- century, “Coastal Nostalgic,” Nantucketmeets- Virginia Beach charm, piques the imagination in terms of the treasures that will lie within.

Not wanting to spoil the surprise factor, Quick was willing to share a few of the key products, finishes and materials that they are excited about. On the exterior, Allura Fiber Cement Siding, both horizontal lap boards and shakes, will provide the authentic look of wood but with greater strength and durability, high wind resistance, and “no rot conditions.” Tamko EverGrain Composite Decking has been selected for the outdoor living spaces for similar reasons of beauty, durability and lowmaintenance in coastal conditions.

Giving the home its soft, beachy, grayish blue-green sea glass color will be a paint that Quick calls “the best you can buy”: Sherwin Williams “Duration” Exterior Acrylic Coating, known for its long-lasting performance and resistance to mildew, peeling and blistering. Plus it is backed by a lifetime warranty for as long as one owns the home. Sherwin Williams paint has also been selected for the interior.

Anchoring the entire interior design will be wide-plank, handscraped hardwood floors from Shaw Floors. Quick describes the reclaimed look as “extraordinary” and a key element in the creation of the home’s nostalgic feel. A darker stain has been selected to contrast beautifully with the expansive use of “light and airy” Carrera marble countertops throughout the home.

Brizo plumbing fixtures receive highest marks from Quick for their unique “high design” all-brass styles. Of the finishes offered, a polished chrome has been selected for its ability to reflect more light and provide a greater sense of dimensionality. “You just want to look at it,” he asserts.

For the ceilings, Craftmade fans proved to be the large, unique “high-design statement pieces” that the team sought for this home. They are, Quick asserts, as stunning to look at as they are practical. And in the kitchen, a knockout, 10-foot furniture-style island from Greenwich Kitchen Center will be the focal point, while GE Monogram and Cafe appliances will offer “commercial functionality with style that blends in easily to residential interiors.”

For the rest, you will have to stay-tuned. Prior to the lucky new owners taking possession in 2015, the public will be invited to tour the home for a nominal fee to benefit local charities.
