In Tune Groom: Men's Tuxedos & Formal Wear

While your bride is spending her time finding her dream gown and picking perfect bridesmaid dresses, it’s your job as the groom to handle your attire and what your groomsmen will wear for the wedding.

Deciding what to wear largely depends on two things—the bride’s gown and the location of the wedding. If your bride is wearing a simple gown on the beach, you may want to skip the tuxedo and dress shoes; but if your bride is wearing an elegant ball gown, you don’t want to show up in resort wear.

If you’re feeling uninspired with having to choose between a suit and a tuxedo, know that you can always express your personality with other aspects of your outfit, such as your tie, cuff links or style of suit.

Here are the most common options that men choose when it comes to formalwear.
Classic suit – great for afternoon or less formal weddings
Black tie – the standard wedding tux
White tie – a tailcoat worn with a white vest and bowtie

Once you’ve decided on your look, you can then select the specifics of the suit.  Here are some terms to remember when purchasing or renting a suit or tux.

Single-breasted – a classic tuxedo jacket
Double-breasted - a tuxedo jacket that is always worn closed
Stroller – a tuxedo jacket without satin accents
Morning coat – a jacket with the front of the skirt cut away, suitable for morning or early afternoon weddings
Waistcoat – a vest to be worn over a dress shirt and necktie and under your jacket
Cummerbund – a waist sash that covers the pants’ waistband
Cuff links – Fasteners worn in the cuffs on a dress shirt

You may have the urge to match the bridesmaids, but a simple white and black tux never goes out of style, especially if the bridesmaid dresses are a vibrant color. Often, the groom will match the groomsmen but will wear something slightly different so that he stands out. If you’re wearing exactly what your groomsmen are wearing, have the florist make your boutonniere a little different from the rest.

Rent vs. Buy?

There are benefits to both. If you think you’ll wear it at least once a year, buying a tuxedo is a sound investment. While it doesn’t have to break the bank, take the time to pick out one you will love for years if you’re going to invest and make sure it’s altered to fit you perfectly.

If you’re looking to stick to a budget, a rented tuxedo can be the way to go. Just remember to try on all parts of a rented tuxedo for fit and check to make sure there aren’t any holes or stains. If you’re groomsmen will all be renting tuxedos, it’s still important to order them ahead of time to assure the rental store can provide the correct quantities and styles.
