Your Day, Your Way: Honeymooning Close to Home (Part 2)

When you live in Hampton Roads, there are plenty of romantic spots that are less than two hours by car but will make you feel miles away. Consider a honeymoon close to home and you may just be surprised how romantic Hampton Roads can be!

In this two part post, we’re exploring local spots that make perfect honeymoon getaways. Even if you’re not from Hampton Roads, you may find yourself tempted to check out one of these dreamy locations.

In today’s post, let’s head north to check out the Eastern Shore, Williamsburg and Richmond.

Eastern Shore

Tucked between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean is the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Although this peninsula is only 30 minutes north of Virginia Beach, it’s unlike any other region of Virginia.

Not only is the Eastern Shore perfect for honeymooning, but there are lots of things for the two of you to do. You can spend the day relaxing on the beach, brave the bay in kayaks, meander through the historic waterfront towns of Cape Charles and Onancock or visit the wild ponies of Chincoteague Island.

If you’re in the mood for a hot breakfast, stay at one of the area’s beds and breakfasts. Book a room at the Bay View Waterfront Bed and Breakfast in Belle Haven and explore its 140 acres of woods, farmland and creek shore. Like many accommodations, specials and packages change frequently.

While the Eastern Shore has campgrounds and houses for rent, you may prefer to stay somewhere like the Hampton Inn & Suites in Exmore. In addition to a hot breakfast, the Romance Package includes fresh flowers, assorted chocolates and “a little bubbly” with toasting flutes to set the mood.

All types of restaurants, from casual to upscale, can offer the ideal location for an evening out or grab some seafood to go and enjoy a romantic picnic on the coast.

You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy Williamsburg, which is less than an hour from almost any spot in Hampton Roads. There is always something going on, from festivals to outdoor markets, and from shows at Busch Gardens to live reenactments on the battlefield.

Treat yourself to several days of luxury at the Kingsmill Resort. Spend the afternoon sharing a game of golf or having couples’ massages at the spa. The Suite Romance package is a current special the resort is running and includes your lodging in a resort one bedroom suite with fireplace, chocolate covered strawberries and Champagne, one room service breakfast-for-two and one dinner-for-two at Eagles Restaurant. When you book, you can always add on spa appointments, a game of tennis (or two) and kayak rentals for day in the sun.

If you prefer to stay in the Historic District, there are options all around. Book a room through Colonial Williamsburg’s American Stories Package and receive nightly accommodations, daily breakfast and a length-of-stay ticket for the Historic Area and Art Museums.

Hold hands as you stroll down the picturesque streets, be swept off your feet on a romantic carriage ride as the sunsets and then share an authentic 18th-century dinner over candlelight.

For a day of thrills, head to Busch Gardens or make a splash at Water Country USA. And don’t forget all the history, from the nearby Historic Jamestown Settlement to Yorktown’s renovated Riverwalk Landing.

Although not located within the Hampton Roads’ region, Richmond is worth visiting and the perfect spot for a romantic honeymoon. Richmond may have over 400 years of history, but its shops, attractions, restaurants and nightlight are anything but old!

Take advantage of one of Richmond’s many Romance Packages. The downtown Doubletree Hotel has a Sweet Romance Getaway package that gives guests deluxe accommodations, sparkling wine, breakfast in-room and extra time to sleep in. The Jefferson Hotel also has a Romance Package that offers a suite or deluxe room at a discounted rate, sparkling wine and strawberries, chocolate truffles at turn-down and room service breakfast. And many more!

With over 900 restaurants, Richmond has something for everyone, including upscale eateries, unique bistros, delicious brunch spots and well-known chefs. In addition to new restaurants and nightlife spots opening all the time, Richmond also has a strong wine culture, with several wineries and vineyards just minutes away.

Grab you new husband (or wife) and visit an art museum, shop ‘til you drop, explore one of Richmond’s one of a kind neighborhoods, or hike one of the trails that surround the city.

No matter where or how you decide to spend your honeymoon, you can take comfort in a new location (or a return visit to a favorite spot), great company and lots of romance!
