Mulled Hard Cider



Picture yourself around a campfire, roasting ‘mallows while a wool blanket drapes around you. The fire crackles against the night sky, but there’s one thing missing: a mug of mulled hard cider.

This mulled hard cider truly adds an extra dose of fall to any get-together! Just when you thought your weekends would slow down after the summer, now they’re chock-full of apple-infused everything and harvest festivities! And here’s one more for you. 

Essentially, this is cider’s take on mulled wine. Since I haven’t mastered apple cider—honestly I just wanted to make this recipe snappy—I purchased a jug of Country Acres Apple Cider from Whole Foods. I added the usual fall spice suspects to the cider and allowed them to get cozy in a simmer session before adding a bottle of semi-sweet white wine. I used Rockbridge Vineyard’s Tuscarora White made with 100% Vidal Blanc. Crisp like green apples, Tuscarora is a perfect complement to this simple mulled hard cider.

Whip this up when you’re in a pinch! Perhaps you have some last minute tidying around the house or appetizer prep for your next football party or, though you may be shy to admit, for a good ol’ Harry Potter marathon. Soon enough—and let me tell you, it is very soon—the spices will start filling your house with an aroma that says, “I’ve been baking pies all day.” Instead it’s this fall elixir that will easily woo your guests and forgo their pie assumptions, at least for the moment. 

So, grab a mug, ladle this spiced goodness to the top and cozy up with fall’s cocktail.

Mulled Hard Cider

Total Time: 20 minutes
Yield: 8-10 servings

apple cider and tuscarora 

Ingredients

1/2 gallon apple cider
1/2 tsp nutmeg
6 cloves
3 cinnamon sticks
1 bottle semi-sweet white wine
1 apple, thinly sliced to garnish

Directions

Add apple cider and spices to a large pot. Bring to a boil, then turn heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Add white wine, and allow it to warm with the cider mix for a couple more minutes. Ladle hard cider into mugs, and garnish with an apple slice. If you’d like, serve it in a crock-pot, and set it near a few mugs for easy serving.
